Ruit is a founding member of the Tilganga Institute of Ophthalmology. It provides free treatment for those who are financially disadvantaged. It also produces a high-quality intraocular lens for surgery at a fraction of the cost of its predecessor production. These lenses are extremely affordable, making quality cataract surgery accessible to even the poorest people in the world.
Ruit received the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Award in recognition of his contributions to peace and international understanding. This award is the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize.
It recognizes Nepal’s leadership in developing safe, efficient, and affordable procedures for cataract surgery. It allows the blindest people in the world, even those from the most disadvantaged countries, to see again.
The Government of India awarded him the Padma Shri Award in 2018 for his innovative work in the 1980s, leading to a 90% reduction in the cost of cataract surgery. Over thirty countries have access to cataract surgery lenses at very low costs.
Dr. Ruit also co-founded and is the director of the Himalayan Cataract Project. Dr. Geoff Tabin, Dr. Ruit, and their co-director work in many areas of Africa and South America like Thailand, Bhutan, Myanmar, Cambodia, and China.
